Boxer held over alleged sex attacks in Olympic village

Brazilian police arrested a Moroccan Olympic boxer on Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting two female cleaners in the athletes’ village in Rio de Janeiro. Officers arrested Hassan Saada, 22, from Casablanca, on suspicion of committing the assault on Wednesday, said a police statement released hours ahead of the Games’ opening ceremony. “According to investigations, on August 3 the athlete sexually assaulted two Brazilian room cleaners who were working in the athletes’ village,” it said. Billions of people around the world are expected to watch on Friday evening as Rio hosts the formal opening of the Olympics, with several world leaders in attendance. Police sources told the news site G1 that Saada was accused of calling the cleaners to his room on the pretext of asking them a question and then improperly touched them. The women managed to escape. The site said that two other athletes were allegedly in the room at the time but did not react to the assault. A court granted a police request for Saada to be held in preventive detention for two weeks pending investigation, the statement said. The International Boxing Association lists Saada as a former Moroccan youth champion and “newcomer to the international scene.” He was to fight in the 81-kilogram (178-pound) or light-heavyweight category in the Rio Games. Saada had been scheduled to fight Mehmet Nadir Unal of Turkey on Saturday in his first bout of the Games, G1 reported. – Olympic scandals – News site Globo reported that the Rio 2016 organizing committee had promised to cooperate with the investigation. It was the latest in a series of scandals and dramas to hit the Games in the crime-plagued Brazilian city. On July 31, a private security guard at Rio’s Olympic Park was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a female firefighter while she slept. Security is a major concern at the Rio Olympics, the first held in South America. About 85,000 police and soldiers, as well as thousands of private guards, have been deployed — double the number used at the 2012 London Games. Brazil suffers high levels of violence against women. Statistics indicate that in 2014 a sexual assault took place on average every 11 minutes. In May an alleged gang rape of an unconscious teenage girl shocked the country after it came to light in an online video posted by the suspects. The Games had already been hit by scandal, with dozens of Russian athletes being barred over allegations of state-run doping. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) said Thursday that all 11 Russian boxers entered for the Rio Olympics had been cleared and should be allowed to compete. The AIBA drew wide criticism in world boxing circles this year for opening the Olympic competition to professional boxers for the first time. Professionals in many other sports — like basketball, ice hockey and tennis — were long ago allowed to compete in the Olympics. SOURCE: NAN

Air force resumes bombing of vandals in Ogun communities

The Nigerian Air Force has resumed the aerial bombardment of hideouts of the vandals in the Ogun State axis of Arepo, launching fresh air strikes on Friday. It was gathered that the NAF resumed the current attack after gunshots were heard firing from deep inside the mangrove forest following the visit of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and other top security personalities to the area on Thursday. A top security source said that the NAF deployed an Augusta helicopter for the operation which struck some locations of the vandals. The source said that the helicopter which commenced operation in the afternoon was still carrying out the onslaught on the hiding militants as of 3pm on Friday. A senior military officer who confided in our correspondent said that the helicopter was deployed in the area after the vandals were sighted by a surveillance aircraft. However, the source was silent on whether there were casualties in the attack or not. “The operation is still ongoing. There is still serious military action going on in the place. Even as we are talking, the Air Force is engaging them from the sky,” the source said. Shortly after the IGP left, ground forces had also moved there to respond to the gunfire from the vandals and the place was quiet for some time, according to the source. “Then on Friday, the helicopter started the fire again. Some of the guys are trapped in the thick forest,” he added. When our correspondent contacted the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Nigerian Air Force, Group Capt. Ayodele Famuyiwa, he confirmed the resumed attack on the vandals location on Thursday but did not give further details. source:NAN

The Rio Games will be the first to feature Olympians born since the year 2000 - and the youngest is 13-year-old Nepalese swimmer Gaurika Singh. What about Russia? The build-up to Rio has been overshadowed by events in Russia, after the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) report into state-sponsored doping in the country. It seemed at one stage that no Russian athletes would be at the Games after Wada recommended a blanket ban. But the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said individual sporting federations must rule on whether Russians can compete. Their decisions were then ratified by a three-person IOC panel. On Thursday, the IOC cleared 271 Russian athletes from the country's original entry list of 389, though 67 of its 68 track and field athletes have been barred by the sport's governing body. Any other problems? Plenty. Brazil is in a deep recession and political crisis, while protests marred the arrival of the Olympic torch in Rio on Wednesday. A New Zealand jiu-jitsu athlete claims he was kidnapped in Rio, while Chinese state media criticised security after women fencers were robbed and shooting team members found "unauthorised payments" on their credit cards. Brazil has drafted in 85,000 security personnel from 55 countries who will be stationed at the sport venues, Olympic Village, airports and main roads - almost twice as many as were at the 2012 London Olympics. There is also 200km of security fencing being used. More than 500,000 tourists are expected to come to the Games and organisers say more than one million of the 7.5 million tickets remain unsold. security at rio Security is tight in Rio with 85,000 security personnel drafted in There have also been issues with the Olympic Village and the sailing venue. Australia initially refused to move into the village, in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood, citing electrical problems, gas and water leaks among other issues in their building. When they did eventually move in, the team were evacuated for a small fire and returned to their rooms to find essential equipment had been stolen. At the sailing venue in Guanabara Bay, a taskforce removed 25.4 tonnes of floating rubbish during last year's Olympic test event. But Rio officials admit they have failed to keep up promises to clean the water and the Associated Press says swallowing just three teaspoons of water from the bay is likely to lead to illness. This is not the first time a host city has been criticised for its preparations, but the IOC says Rio is now "ready to welcome the world". rio olympics And then there is Zika Brazil is at the centre of an outbreak of Zika virus, that is spread by mosquitoes and can lead to birth defects. It is so serious the World Health Organisation has recommended pregnant women avoid travelling to the Games - but mosquitoes are rare in August and in June it recommended the Games not be moved or cancelled. That advice has not stopped a number of the world's top golfers and tennis players withdrawing, citing Zika fears. But what about the actual sport? Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt and Neymar will be among the stars in Rio Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt and Neymar will be among the stars in Rio Competitions will take place across 32 venues in Rio, with football matches also scheduled for the cities of Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Manaus, Salvador and Sao Paulo. There are 306 events in 28 Olympic sports but none are bigger than the 100m sprint final and the world's fastest man Usain Bolt. The Jamaican is aiming for an unprecedented triple triple, as he tries to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay titles for the third time - and his battle with American sprinter Justin Gatlin is likely to be a highlight of the Games. USA swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, will be looking to add to his 18 gold medals. American tennis player Serena Williams could win her fifth Olympic medal, while Team USA's star-studded basketball team will be aiming for their third consecutive gold. Brazil's Barcelona striker Neymar will once again carry the hopes of the home nation as they go for gold in the men's football. Sonny Bill Williams is one of the stars of the New Zealand rugby sevens team Rio marks the return of golf and rugby to the Olympics. Golf is returning after a 112-year absence but without more than 20 of its top players. The top four male golfers Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson have all withdrawn because of Zika fears. In fact, only four of the top 10 will be in Rio - and McIlroy said he probably will not even watch television coverage of golf at the Games, preferring "track and field, swimming, diving, the stuff that matters". Rugby sevens will be making its debut at the Olympics, although rugby union featured regularly at the Games until 1924. Team GB medal hopes mo farah and ennis-hill Farah and Ennis-Hill will be defending their Olympic titles in Rio Great Britain's athletes have been set a minimum target of winning 48 medals, which would make Rio their most successful overseas Olympics. UPDATE: Dogara meets Buhari, says he won’t resign

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met behind closed doors with the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara. Dogara is currently in the eye of the storm following allegations by a former Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, that he (Dogara); the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yussuff Lasun; the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; and the Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, padded the 2016 Budget. THE PUNCH had reported exclusively on Friday that Buhari would meet with Dogara on the matter. The Speaker was accompanied to the meeting which was held inside the President’s office by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives), Suleiman Kawu. At the end of the meeting, which lasted less than 30 minutes, Dogara told State House correspondents that he would not resign to pave way for thorough investigation of the allegations as being canvassed by some individuals and groups. He said with his experience as a lawyer and a federal lawmaker of many years, he has never heard padding as being an offence under the law. He also ruled out the possibility of reconvening the House before the September scheduled resumption time over the matter, saying the House of Representatives is not a mock institution. Dogara also claimed he is not worried by the allegations leveled against him. On whether the House will sanction Jibrin on the matter, the Speaker said he is not the Chairman of the House Ethics Committee. The following encounter took place between the Speaker and reporters: Reporter: What informed your visit to the Presidential Villa this Friday? Speaker: You mean I can’t come and see my President? Do I need any reason to come and see my President. It was a private visit. Reporter: Was the issue of alleged budget padding discussed? Speaker: What is budget padding? Reporter: The language emanated from your chambers Speaker: I don’t know, educate me. I am a lawyer and the Speaker and I have never heard of the word “padding.” What does “padding” mean? Reporter: Your former chairman of Appropriation Committee is saying you padded the budget. What is your reaction to that? Speaker: Ask him. He who alleges must prove; that is the law in Nigeria. Reporter: Are you not going to defend yourself? Speaker: Am I before a court? Reporter: There are people saying you should reconvene the House before September resumption time and step aside for thorough investigation to be carried out. What is your reaction to this? Speaker: We have rules and regulations. This is not a mock institution, we operate by rules and we will follow the rules. Reporter: Will you resign? Speaker: Resign for what? For what? Reporter: On this allegation. Speaker: What is the allegation? Reporter: That you and some members of the leadership padded the budget. Speaker: What is padding? You haven’t told me. Ask Jibrin what is padding? For me, I studied Law and I have been in the legislature and all this period I have never heard of the word “padding” being an offence under any law. If I don’t know, you are the media, research the law and let me know Reporter: Are you worried? Speaker: Worried for what? Worried over nothing? Why should I be worried? As far as I am concerned, I am not worried over anything. Reporter: Will there be sanctions for Jibrin? Speaker: I am not the Chairman of Ethics Committee of the House so I wouldn’t know and I don’t know what padding means. source:punchng.com

Fulfilment of electoral promises not easy – Buhari Agrees

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said he was committed to the fulfilment of his electoral promises to Nigerians. He however admitted that the task is not an easy one. Buhari spoke at the Graduation Ceremony of Course 24 of the National Defence College, Abuja where he was the Special Guest of Honour. He said though it was not easy to make good the electoral promises, he and members of his team were trusting in God that they would deliver through hard work and sound vision. He said, “Let me assure you all that this administration is committed to bequeathing to this nation, a new orientation in leadership that will be service-driven and committed to the realisation of its promises to the electorates. “We are however not under any illusions that this task is an easy one. “But we have put our trust in God knowing that with hard work and sound vision, we will triumph.” Buhari expressed delight that in the last one year, through the hard work, dedication and sacrifices made by members of the nation’s armed forces and security services, the nation had been able to degrade the capacity of Boko Haram insurgents to wreck havoc. On the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers, the President said his administration would not condone any act of criminality. He said he had therefore directed security agencies to deal decisively with the situation. “On the matter of herdsmen/farmers clashes, I wish to state that this administration will not tolerate or condone acts of banditry and criminality, under any guise. “As such, our security agencies have been mandated to deal with such acts decisively. ” Let me state that this administration has been working assiduously in conjunction with our local and international partners, to rebuild damaged communities in North East part of our country. “Similarly, we are committed to tackling the issues of underdevelopment and neglect in the Niger Delta area. “This is a priority we have set before us and we intend to make appreciable gains in correcting the ills of the past in the Niger Delta by assuaging inherent grievances,” he said. For the Nigerian graduating participants, Buhari said he expected that they would all have made the most of their time on the course and be ready to join the ongoing process to change Nigeria for the better. He said Nigeria had made tremendous progress in the last one year towards taking her rightful position in the comity of nations. The President promised to continue to build on the progress in the coming years so as to ensure that Nigeria maintains the heights it had achieved, adding that it is a task that all Nigerians must resolve to do. He said, “International confidence in our country and its future is beginning to return, because of how we are slowly finding ways to solve our problems. “The nation is beginning to have faith in the ability of our society’s institutional capacity to tackle our problems. But we must work doubly hard to restore our nation to higher glory. “The Nigerian Armed Forces have proven to be equal to the task of maintaining our internal and external security.” The President recalled that at the inception of his administration, he outlined certain core areas of our national life that require immediate intervention, which include to secure the country, improve the economy and fight corruption. He said corruption and poverty remained the country’s main problems. He said billions of naira have been recovered from indicted companies and individuals, adding that through the implementation and enforcement of the Treasury Single Account, the nation had also saved more money. Buhari said Nigeria needs a philosophy of transparency and accountability in governance to tap the nation’s vast opportunities. “The other core areas that we need to improve are the rule of law and moral standards in government and in society in order to provide a good foundation for good governance so that our gains are not dissipated by corruption. “Good governance must be based on a sound moral foundation, a philosophy of transparency, accountability and an ethic of effective implementation. “Already, our unrelenting fight against criminality and corruption in governance is a clear testament that we intend to address these problems,” he said.

US First Daughter Sasha Obama serves seafood in summer job

Sasha Obama, daughter of US President Barack Obama, has swapped the comforts of the White House for the counter of a seafood restaurant, US media report. The 15-year-old has taken a summer job serving food at the business in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Sasha, using her full name, Natasha, has been accompanied to the restaurant by a contingent of six secret service agents, the Boston Herald reports. The town has been a favourite location for the Obamas on their summer breaks. Photographs show the president's youngest daughter wearing the restaurant's uniform of blue T-shirt and cap and working at a till. A co-worker told the Herald: "She's been working downstairs at takeout. We were wondering why there were six people helping this girl, but then we found out who it was." The White House has not commented on the report but First Lady Michelle Obama has spoken about trying to bring her two daughters up as normally as possible. As well as working on the takeaway counter, Sasha Obama's other duties reportedly include waiting on tables and helping to prepare the restaurant for its lunchtime opening. Her security team has been seen waiting nearby in a large car or sitting on benches while the First Daughter deals with tourists' meals.

Olympics: I will win a medal, says Nigeria’s lone weightlifter

Four years ago, Nigeria featured in the weightlifting event of the London 2012 Olympic Games with two weightlifters and returned no laurel. The same was the case after the weightlifters outing at Being 2008 Olympics where Nigeria won only four medals overall but none in weightlifting. With two days to the start of the 2016 edition of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nigeria’s only representative in weightlifting, Maryam Usman, 26, is upbeat that this time, she will win a medal. Nigeria will be represented by only Usman in Rio because she is the only weightlifter that amassed the necessary points to qualify for the Games. The development has easily shown the country’s shoddy preparations for international events. It exposed the situation where the nation failed to participate in the many qualifiers where the athletes could have secured the vital points to berth at the Olympics. But apparently undaunted, Usman says that the poor preparation for the Rio Olympics is now “a challenge that will spur me to clinch a medal for the nation’’. She told NAN on Tuesday that she has been training on her own and didn’t rely on programmes conducted at the national camp. The lifter, who will be making her third Olympic appearance, said she had the ability and confidence to register her name on the Games’ medals log. “The preparation is nothing to talk about; but I am not discouraged, rather I’m taking it up as a challenge to increase the tempo of my training outside the national camp. “We have been in camp for the past two months training seriously, this will enable me to win a medal this time around and I know that almighty God will support my effort. “I was in Beijing and London Olympics in 2008 and 2012 respectively, but couldn’t win any medal. “However, this is another opportunity for me and I must make the difference this time. “Thank God for exposure at previous Olympics, continental championships and series of trials that has helped me to garner the basic points that earned me this Olympic ticket,’’ she said. George Aluo, the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), said Usman, qualified for the Games after her brilliant performances at the trials in Yaoundé, Cameroun in May. “Usman is the only one for weightlifting event in Rio; she did excellently well at the qualifiers which saw her through and she was able to secure the Olympic ticket,’’ he said. source: NAN

Nigerians hail U-23 team for defeating Japan

Football enthusiasts in Nsukka, Enugu state, have hailed the impressive performance of Nigeria’s U-23 Dream Team which beat Japan 5-4 in its first match on Friday at Manaus, Brazil , in the Rio Olympics. The enthusiasts in Nsukka on Friday said the positive start was an indication that the team would do the country proud in the Rio Olympic Games. Chibuike Ogummah, a secondary school games Master, said U-23 team beating Japan had sent a strong signal to countries in group ‘B’ and other teams participating in the tournament that Nigeria was a force to reckon with. “The boys gave very good account of themselves not minding that they arrived Brazil some hours to the match. “This good beginning is an indication that the boys will come home with the golden cup. “I will be happy if U-23 plays their remaining matches with the team spirit and confidence exhibited in this first match with Japan,” he said. Victor Udoh, a student at University of Nigeria Nsukka, urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the team so that God that gave them the first victory would continue to be with them. “Nigeria’s defeat of Japan is the work of God because given the Dream Team’s late arrival in Brazil, many people already gave that match to Japan. “The U-23’s first victory shows that the team and their handlers are determined to do the country proud and will not allow anything to distract them. “With this good beginning, I am optimistic that U-23 will also defeat Sweden in their next match on Sunday,’’ he said. Joy Ugwu, a civil servant, urged the Federal Government to ensure that everything the team needed was provided to sustain the player’ high spirits. “Government should avoid anything that will demoralise the players and their handlers by providing them with all they needed to lift Rio Olympic golden trophy . “Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora should continue to pray for the dream team so that as the team has started on winning note, it will also end up in winning its final match. “The Dream Team and their handlers should know that this first victory calls for extra hardwork as other teams in Group B and other participating countries will now do serious preparations in any encounter with U-23; now Nigeria dream team has been seen as a tough team ,” he said. source; punchng.com
